Tips for Growing Gorgeous Roses for National Rose Month

Wed, 22 Jun 2011 by Sadler Homes

June is National Rose Month and there are many ways to celebrate. Instead of purchasing fresh roses grow them in your homes in Chesapeake, VA garden. Knowing the type of rose, color, how large they become at full bloom, blooming season, scent and hardiness will help you have healthier roses. Sadler Homes offers the following tips for growing gorgeous roses for National Rose Month.

Soil – Roses should be planted in healthy soil and need many natural elements to thrive and survive. Purchase fertilizers that contain Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. Too much fertilization can kill your roses. Have adequate drainage because roses don’t thrive in oversaturated soil.

Where to plant – Most roses need at least six hours of sunlight per day. Morning sunlight’s best since the flowers and leaves tend to burn in afternoon sunlight, especially in warmer climates. Roses that don’t get enough sunlight are weak and thin. Kathleen, Penelope, Golden Showers, Cornelia and Shropshire Lad roses thrive in partial shade. Roses need enough room to grow so don’t plant them too close to each other; twenty-five to thirty feet are close enough. Roses shouldn’t be planted near trees or shrubbery because they can take the essential nutrients roses need.

Water – Water newly planted roses every other day and deep-water established roses (3-4 years) at least once a week and more frequently when there’s hotter weather at your homes in Chesapeake, VA. Apply water directly to the base of the roses bush.

Prune – Trim your older roses annually. Prune roses right after they have bloomed to prepare them to grow next year during blooming season but not in the spring because roses mostly flower from prior years growth.

Following these steps should help you successfully grow gorgeous roses at your homes in Chesapeake, VA home. Good luck and happy gardening.
